OBJECTIVE

Advancement of scientific knowledge pertaining to fibers, fiber based products, and fibrous materials.

ORGANIZATION

The Society was founded in 1941 and is incorporated as a nonprofit professional and scientific association. The general management and supervision of the Society is delegated to the Governing Council, which is elected by and from the membership.

MEMBERSHIP

The society is composed of members who are chemists, physicists, and engineers with interests in the field of fiber science engineering and technology. There are no corporate or institutional members. Membership is by nomination only and requires evidence of significant contributions and commitment to the fields of fiber science, engineering, and technology.

A graduate student engaged in studies and research in the fields of fiber science, engineering, and technology related disciplines may be admitted as a student member on the recommendation of a faculty mentor, preferably the major advisor.

TECHNICAL MEETINGS

The Society sponsors two technical meetings each year, either in the form of a general technical conference or in the form of a symposium on a specialized topic. Meetings are generally held in the United States or abroad, whenever a strong local organization undertakes the responsibility to do so. Attendance at Society meetings is open to all participants interested in the field. Attendance of students and academic faculties is particularly encouraged. The registration fee for all regularly enrolled undergraduate and graduate students is normally waived.

SOCIETY LECTURESHIP PROGRAM

The Society sponsors Fiber Society Lectureships at selected colleges and universities in the United States. The underlying purpose of these lectureships is to acquaint students and members of faculty with the scientific challenges and opportunities in the field of fiber scienc, engineering, and technology.

AWARDS PROGRAM

The Society sponsors an Award for Distinguished Achievement in Fiber Science. This Award is presented to individuals under the age of 40 who have made significant contributions to the field. It is intended to recognize early achievement and to stimulate continuing commitment to the field of fiber science. In contrast the Founders Award has been established to recognize outstanding contributions to secience and technology of fibers, fibrous materials, and fiber-based products regardless of age.

The Society also awards Honorary Membership in recognition of life-long contributions to the field.

Student Award: The Society sponsors a student paper competition in order to encourage participation by graduate students in the Society sponsored technical meetings.
