The 1948 Governing Council minutes record the following remarks, suggesting the initial concept of the lectureship:

“Dr. Simon Williams gave the members of the Society an account of his recent tour into the west and northwest for the purpose of acquainting university people in this section of the country with the importance of cotton textiles and textile research. He proposed that the Society sponsor similar tours throughout the country provided financial arrangements could be made with organizations and institutions in promoting textiles. It was the concensus of the members present that such an approach would be helpful to the entire textile industry. It was suggested that Dr. Simon Williams contact textile interests who might be willing to handle the finances of such a program and that the Society would ascertain from the members if they would be willing to participate.”
